Did you know that your shoulder, neck or hip pain might actually stem from other areas of your body? As Osteopaths, Dr Rhys Donovan, Dr Dan Garner and Dr Rick Hartley can diagnose the cause of your complaint, find out what else is contrubuting to it and correct all the problems to help you gain control of your life once again.
I've Never Heard Of An Osteopath!
Cronulla is an area which is dominated by many health professionals, and it can often be hard to work out who would be best to see. While Osteopathy has been around for longer than Chiropractic, and almost as long as Physiotherapy, Osteopathy tends to be less known than it's counterparts.
What Makes An Osteopath Different?
The beauty with Osteopathy is that it approaches each and every patient in a holistic manner. Back pain is never looked at just being pain in the back, it's back pain potentially stemming from one or many other things.
This could be a slumping posture, occupation, bad habits (eg. crossing legs or sitting on a wallet), structural changes within the body (eg. scoliosis), old injuries, feet & gait issues, incorrect footwear or something more sinister. Every possible cause is considered when forming a diagnosis.
You will also find that Osteopathic appointments tend to be longer than other certain modalities and the frequency of ongoing treatment varies from patient to patient, depending on what will provide the best outcome. It is rare for us to have a patient returning for ongoing 'maintenance' visits, as the Osteopathic approach encourages patients to learn to maintain their own bodies, and that treatment is only necessary when this can't be done.
What Can I Expect In My Appointment With The Osteopath?
Cronulla lends itself to an active & sporty clientele, and the style of Osteopathic treatment reflects this. Typically in an initial Osteopathic treatment you can expect a full case history, orthopaedic examination, thorough explanation of the diagnosis and any results (X-Rays, MRI's etc) which are usually given to patients without them fully understanding what is going on. From there treatment will usually consist of deep tissue (remedial) massage, joint mobilisation, joint adjustments/manipulations (cracking), stretching and exercise prescription. Following this a treatment plan will be formulated and advice given on how best to manage your condition.
Of course, this is general information only and the exact treatment given will vary from patient to patient. Gentler techniques (BLT, Counterstrain, Myofascial Release) can be used for those in intense pain or those who just aren't accustomed to deep tissue style treatments.
One thing we understand is that not every patient likes to be 'cracked' and we never enforce this on any patient. The actual treatment you receive is completely up to you any anything that you're uncomfortable with will be taken in to consideration.
