What Is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy was founded on the principle that your body's structure (i.e. muscles, bones, ligaments and organs) influences its function (i.e. breathing, circulation, metabolism and digestion). Once significant pathology is cleared an osteopath considers physical, emotional and dietary stresses and just how your body may be compensating for these stresses.
Osteopathic treatment uses a variety of techniques which may include soft-tissue massage, stretching, joint manipulation/adjusting, postural rehabilitation and education on diet, lifestyle and exercise. All of these recommendations will be put in to a tailor made plan to suit your recovery.
What makes us different from other therapies is that we pride ourselves on diagnosing and treating holistically. This means we look at neighboring areas and other body systems to see how they may be contributing to your symptoms. We prescribe our treatments on a case by case basis and don't just treat everyone with a standardised, one size fits all approach because we believe that every person is unique and subsequently warrants a unique treatment approach.

Osteopathy; Is It A New Treatment?
Osteopathy is not new at all. In fact it dates back to the late 1800's to a time before Chiropractors and not too long after the first Physiotherapy registration. Despite this, some how osteopathy has unfortunately become much lesser known than these other types of allied medical treatment.
Osteopathy & Medicine
Osteopathy and medicine while typically being a hands on approach vs hand off approach, both approach diagnosis and treatment using the most up to date scientific understanding of anatomy and physiology. Both use clinical ways of diagnosing a condition and both require comprehensive training and ongoing study.
The current Osteopathy program is a 3 year Bachelor University degree followed by a 2 year Masters degree.
Most Osteopath's don't think of themselves as an "alternate choice" to a GP or surgery, but instead as a complement to it. By having a holistic approach to the human body the results of mainstream medicine can be heightened.
